November 2020

Shadower- FIU AMSA Following Physicians Shadowing

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, attended and completed virtual shadowing through the FIU American Medical Student Association (AMSA).

  • Received Certificates of Completion for participating in Dr. Andrew Chung Spine Surgery Session and Dr. Shweta Akhouri Family Medicine Session.

Emergency Medicine Observer- Baptist Hospital Observer Program 

  • Shadowed Dr. Leo Huynh, D.O., Chief of Emergency Medicine, to gain clinical experience interacting with patients, engaging in diagnoses, and adapting to the ER environment.

  • Learned the types of questions the physician asked that would be relevant to the diagnoses.

General Surgery Observer- Baptist Hospital Observer Program

  • Observed Dr. Jorge Rabaza, M.D., FACS, perform bariatric surgery, including revisional surgery.

  • Experienced robotic surgical procedures that help the surgeon gain greater precision due to advances in optical magnification.

Clinical Shadowing- The Selem Center Ophthalmology & Plastic Surgery

  • Observed Joseph Selem, M.D., Ophthalmologist & Plastic Surgeon, perform various surgeries, such as: blepharoplasty, facial reconstruction and eyelid ptosis repair.

  • Learned about multiple eye examinations, such as: visual acuity test, ocular motility, retinoscopy, and stereopsis test.

  • Provided compassion and empathy to patients before, during and after surgery.

  • Observed Amalia Galindez, M.D., Internal Medicine Specialist.

  • Learned about patient care and medical terminology.

  • Understood the importance of taking time with each patient and that each patient has different needs and expectations.

DOCS Translator- Miller School of Medicine Department of Community Service

  • Served as a translator in Spanish to bridge the language barrier between the patient and the physician in multiple health fairs across underserved communities in South Florida.

  • Experienced cholesterol testing, female Pap smear and breast examination, male prostate examination, bone density screening, diabetes assessment, and mental health evaluation.

  • Developed skills as a communicator by effectively communicating to patients.

  • Learned to adapt to various communication styles, such as gender‐neutral language, visual

    word choice for young ages, and the multiple Spanish dialects used in South Florida.

Clinical Volunteer- Skin Associates of South Florida

  • Work closely with Joely Kaufman, M.D., Dermatologist, to appropriately implement care to patients suffering with multiple skin conditions.

  • Maintain a clean environment for each patient and follow standard precaution.

  • Transfer patients to patient rooms and assist in a variety of clinical tasks.

Marketing Director- Hope for Kasai

• Promoted the sale of Hope for Kasai bracelets, blankets, and pouches at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, for which all proceeds went to the non-profit organization dedicated to helping the underprivileged youth and women of Kasai, Congo in Africa.

STEM Club Founder and First President- Our Lady of Lourdes Academy

  • Responsible for establishing the first STEM Club at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy (OLLA), an all-girls high school in Miami, FL.

  • Organized meetings to discuss current events and planned hands on school wide projects regarding science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

  • Returned and presented as a guest speaker to share experiences in research as an undergraduate at FIU and gave tips on pursuing a career in STEM as an alumna ’17 of OLLA.

Research Assistant- FIU Biochemistry & Chemistry Department

  • Work with the X-Ray Diffractometer to research electron diffraction in single crystals and determine the molecular structure of the single crystal through the Olex2 software with Raphael Raptis, Ph.D., and Indranil Chakraborty, Ph.D.

  • Synthesize new crystal structures of oxo-rhenium complexes for the potential treatment of tumors and radiopharmaceutical applications.

  • Presented my findings at the FIU Conference for Undergraduate Research 2019.

HHMI Scholar Internship Research Program- Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

  • Conducted ophthalmology research with Sanjoy Bhattachayra, Ph.D., to analyze the changes and variations of lipid concentrations of neuronal cells after they were put under stressful and high pneumatic pressurized conditions. 

  • Expanded the understanding of the intracellular effects of glaucoma.

Research Volunteer- Skin Research Institute

  • Work with Jeremy Green, M.D., and Christopher O’Connell, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologists to conduct clinical trials for medical devices and biologic products.
